Day 22: Detox Complete

It’s a happy coincidence (only kinda sorta) that I finished out my detox in time for Easter. I’ll admit, I planned it this way, although from the start it was really a question of whether I wanted things to end on this day or end yesterday. Having decided that I’d like to have some wine with dinner, and some Jello eggs (it’s not Easter without ’em), I opted to set things so that the detox finished yesterday.

21 days of basically no sugar, sugar substitutes, or artificial sweeteners, and I have emerged 15 pounds lighter. Part of that can likely be attributed to also eliminating beer (and alcohol in general) from the diet just as much as pizza, pasta, and Wild Chef, but it’s exactly the kind of momentum I was looking to build up. Today aside, I’m looking forward to something more akin to a gear shift than a radical departure from the menu of the last three weeks. It’ll still be something fairly heavy on the protein and fairly light on the carbs, but I’m getting my Diet Coke back, along with an occasional splash of rum or whiskey.

Maybe it’s the fact that it’s 70 degrees outside and I have the windows wide open and the sun shining in, but I’m starting to feel very good about the coming months. It’s getting warmer, I’m starting to actually like what I look like again, and grilling season is upon us once more. If I can find a way to keep busy (not too hard these days) between now and then, I just might manage to keep dropping the pounds. I’ve got a goal in mind for September that’s probably a little bit unrealistic at this point, but I also didn’t expect to drop 15 pounds in 21 days. Who knows what this spring, and the summer to follow, will bring.
