Burn Notice (Spoilers!)

If you like Burn Notice and have not seen the season 4 finale, stop reading right now. Hit the Back button or close your browser or do…something. Anything. Just don’t keep reading. I’ll try to keep it vague, but some things you just can’t suppress.

Tonight was the finale for Season 4 of Burn Notice. It was, as all good season finales are (I’m looking at you, Battlestar Galactica) 2 hours long and basically high-tension the entire way through. I had heard a few things about how it was going to end a month or two ago, and I was kind of curious to see how they would make that happen, but I found myself becoming entirely absorbed in the episodes and forgetting completely about pretty much everything else.

I’d like to begin by saying that the first hour did what I had only previously dreamed of, if I dreamed of Burn Notice (if I had more control over my dreams, I would) in pairing up two of Michael’s more persistent enemies. I’m bummed that Michael didn’t get a chance to close things down personally, but the thing about this show is that it’s pretty bloodless given the content; it’s kind of like Narnia is to Lord of the Rings: good but somehow lacking in reality.

The second hour pretty much played out in the same way that most season finales do; the client of the week plot device is suspended in favor of the overarching plot, and I like what they do with it. The downside is that there really aren’t too many more ways that the tension can be increased, and the writers are going to run the risk of writing contrived episodes in the next few seasons to come. I was happy to see the way things ended, but honestly, when I saw the last scene with what’s-his-face (surely we’ll get a name of some kind soon), all I thought of was this:

Lord Vader
Michael's welcome back home.

Maybe it’s because one of the last big roles I saw him in was from Kings (anybody remember that one?) when the guy played a conniving SOB, but I definitely got the impression that this was not a guy that Michael wanted to shake hands with after arriving.

In any event, I’m stoked for the next season. At some point in the near future this season will work its way up to the top of my iTunes wish list and will wind up on my NAS, so that I can enjoy it whenever. For now, though, I’ll just have to Hulu it. Over and over and over.
