40 Recipe Challenge – An Update

Last year, one of my goals was to try 40 new recipes. I made it all the way up to 16.

2012 was not the best year for me.

Since then, however, I’ve moved, purchased a grill (Weber Performer…as if there were any other choice), and really tore into the cookbooks. Below is a summary of some of the new stuff I’ve played with in the past 4 months. At some point as I loop back on these recipes, I’ll dive into them in the same way that I have in the past.

Beer can chicken
Yachtsman Delmonicos
Hoisin chicken skewers with vegetables (available here)
Cedar-planked salmon, two ways
Grilled lemon-pepper chicken
Thai shrimp soup
Mango sorbet
Quiche (covered here)
Hummus
Barbecue beef
Corn chowder
Fiery Boursin burgers (available here)
Beef stew with vegetables (available here)
Crock pot chicken soup
Black bean and potato soup
Baked macaroni and cheese (available here)
Spinach salad with pears and bacon
Bacon-wrapped teriyaki scallops

18 recipes in the first 4 months of the year. Not a bad start.

A big part of the push to try new things was the result of getting the grill and moving into a new place. With the grill, I had the chance to make a bunch of the food that I had loved, like steaks, jalapeno cheddar beer brats, and killer garlic shrimp. I got a few new cookbooks for Christmas, and I wanted to try out what was in those. One of my friends, a vegetarian no less, got me a giant cookbook on grilling steak. I could spend a year, and more than a year’s salary, working my way through that cookbook.

Even though I didn’t hit the goal last year, I’m going to continue on with the challenge. Will there ultimately be more than 40 recipes in the collection? More than likely. I don’t consider that a bad thing, though.
