Sushi Review: CitySen Sushi Night

Last night a couple of friends and I got together at the CityFlats hotel in downtown Holland for their once a week sushi night. The hotel advertises it around town like it’s kind of a big deal, and I believed it; enough so that when a friend emailed us with the plan and mentioned that the ingredients for the sushi had been flown in fresh that morning from Osaka, I believed him. Then again, I’m also kind of gullible at 8am.

CitySen (the lounge-type bar in the ground floor of the CityFlats hotel) had a decent selection of sushi, maybe about 7 different rolls and an assortment of sashimi. The group of us all ordered different rolls to pass around and sample.

The verdict? The sushi was alright; it was made fresh and delivered straight to our table, which earns some props, but I found that most of the sushi lacked and kind of intensity; I expected the spicy tuna to have some kick to it, or the smoked salmon roll to have a, well, smoky taste to it. In both cases, these flavors were muted to say the least. The rolls were an impressive size, but they lacked the kind of fall-apart-in-your-mouth texture that I so love about the sushi at Wild Chef (a review on that delicacy is coming soon).

At $5 to $7.50 for about 7 rolls, the sushi was certainly more expensive than the kind of sushi that you’d find at a grocery store but slightly cheaper than what you’d find at a nicer place like Wild Chef. Ultimately though, I found that it wasn’t worth the added expense. It was a good meal, but probably not one we will be repeating too often.

Overall rating: three out of five.
