Sushi Review: Party Sushi

Tuesday I decided to strike out on an afternoon of wandering, and since I was alone and my friend has a pretty bad shellfish allergy, I figured it was as good a time as any to grab some sushi. I did some searching online to try and find a sushi place that wasn’t either a 40-minute walk or BART ride away, and ultimately settled on a place called Party Sushi. This was either going to go well or end very, very badly.

Party Sushi is located along one of the main roads in Berkeley, right next to a garage. I went in around 1, so the place was pretty quiet. It wasn’t very large and the decor is pretty much nonexistent, but I’m there for the sushi, not the paintings on the walls. I opted to go with two rolls that I had never done before: their California roll and one of their specialty rolls called “The Bomb”.

The California roll was tuna and avocado; a nice basic, cool roll that I was hoping would be a good counter balance to the heat of the Bomb roll. I usually prefer more complex flavor in my sushi, but this was pretty good, and at $3.50 it’s hard to go wrong.

The Bomb roll was spicy tuna topped with a seaweed salad. The seaweed salad, in all it’s slimy-looking green glory, definitely put me a bit out of my comfort zone, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as it might have looked. The Bomb is definitely an appropriate name for this roll; there’s almost no heat on the front, but once you start thinking you’re out of the woods, the heat arrives. It was intense without being overwhelming. Definitely not a disappointment.

Ultimately, despite its eyebrow-raising name, hole-in-the-wall location, and sketchy looking website, Party Sushi was worth the walk. The rolls were generously sized and well-priced. It’s not Wild Chef, but it was certainly not a lunch wasted.
